At The Balanced Life, we’re great believers in looking after the planet as well as your own body. Reducing our plastic waste is big news at the moment…and with good reason!
The long term damage to the earth we love is at break point and we all need to play our part in turning it around. With that in mind, we thought we’d share our top tips for reducing your plastic waste…
1. Shop small – supporting small independent retailers is high on our agenda for many reasons, but they’re often a great place to find fresh produce that’s not bundled up in plastic bags. Looking for small grocery shops that stock seasonal produce means the food won’t have travelled as far and often won’t have the same amount of packaging as that in large supermarkets.
2. Think ahead – yes we’re all in a rush on a morning and remembering your water bottle might be low on the agenda, but it’s a small effort to make considering the UK uses 38.5 million plastic bottles every day, of which 15 million are not recycled. We’re also responsible for 7 million disposable coffee cups being thrown away each day…so leave your reusable mug by the front door and don’t forget to grab it on your way out!
3. Support the resurgence of the milk man and the scoop & weigh shops – it may sound pretty retro but they’re both making a come back…and we love it! Track down your local milkman and see if he delivers in glass bottles. There’s something hugely nostalgic about opening the front door to fresh bottles of milk. And if you haven’t heard of scoop and weigh stores, you need to get involved. These little jems stock all of your essentials, from flour and oats to almonds and rice, so take some containers or check they have paper bags and stock up …buying this way often works out cheaper too.
